Cache and Storage Behaviour in Streaming Apps
Why streaming app caches grow, how that causes crashes on small-storage devices, and how to clear cache safely.

Cache growth is behind a surprising share of streaming app problems, particularly on 8 GB Fire TV and Chromecast hardware.
What gets cached
- Poster art and backdrops, which dominate on image-heavy interfaces.
- Metadata responses and search results.
- Playback buffer segments and subtitle files.
- Embedded web view data from any in-app browser or ad frames.
Why it causes failures
Android behaves poorly when a volume approaches full. Writes fail, databases get corrupted and the system starts killing processes. The symptom looks like an application bug — crashes, blank screens, failed playback — but the cause is free space.
Keeping at least 15 percent of storage free is a good rule on any streaming device.
Clearing cache safely
On Android and Fire OS, Settings › Apps › (app) › Storage offers Clear cache and Clear data. Clear cache removes temporary files only and is always safe. Clear data resets the app to a fresh state, including settings and any local watch history.
