Streaming App Settings That Actually Matter
The handful of settings — quality caps, hardware decoding, autoplay, data saver — that meaningfully change playback quality.

Most settings screens are long and most of it does not matter. These are the controls that change real behaviour.
Quality cap
Capping resolution to what the display can actually show avoids wasted bandwidth and decode load. A 1080p television gains nothing from a 4K stream, and on a small-storage device the extra buffer pressure makes things worse.
Hardware versus software decoding
Hardware decoding is efficient but limited to codecs the chip supports. Software decoding is universal but heavy. If a specific format stutters or shows a green screen, switching decode mode is the single most useful test.
Autoplay and preloading
Autoplay of trailers and next episodes consumes bandwidth continuously. On congested networks, disabling it noticeably reduces buffering elsewhere.
Data saver and background activity
- Data saver limits background fetching on metered connections.
- Restricting background activity extends battery life on phones.
- Disabling background sync reduces cache growth on 8 GB devices.
