Why 'ad-free' builds are worse
An ad-free repackage has been decompiled and re-signed by an unknown party. Stripping a visible ad SDK is easy; adding a hidden one, or a click-fraud module, is just as easy. This is among the most reliably malicious categories of modified app.
Legitimate reduction
- Network-level DNS filtering such as Pi-hole or a filtering resolver.
- Paid tiers of licensed services, which remove ads contractually.
- Free licensed services, whose ad inventory is vetted.
The underlying trade
Aggressive advertising is the business model of unofficial apps. Removing it removes the reason someone maintains and distributes the build — which tells you what the replacement revenue source is likely to be.
