Modern Chromebooks run Android applications in a managed container. That container is deliberately restrictive, which is why non-store apps behave differently there than on a phone.
Container restrictions
- Installing outside Google Play generally requires ChromeOS developer mode, which disables verified boot and wipes local data.
- School and workplace Chromebooks are enrolled under enterprise policy and simply refuse non-store installs.
- Filesystem access between ChromeOS and the Android container is intentionally limited, breaking download and subtitle workflows.
- Window resizing on Android apps is inconsistent and some render in a fixed portrait frame.
Performance
Entry-level Chromebooks lack the decode capability for high bitrate video inside the Android container even when the same file plays fine in the browser. Browser-based licensed services are usually the smoother path on this hardware.
